Canada Immigration

Immigrants contribute to Canada's economy, culture and society. Almost one-quarter of the country's population is now immigrant or permanent resident, the highest proportion since Confederation.

Immigration is critical for Canada's future. It will help to offset declines in birth rates and population aging.

Background Checks

In Canada, everyone who applies for a visa or a refugee claim must undergo a background check. This process helps detain criminals and other ineligible applicants, while also ensuring the safety and security of Canada.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) conducts these checks, working with local police forces in Canada and abroad and intelligence agencies. They also work with IRCC and CSIS, which handles immigration and security screening.

The first stage of the background check is a criminality check, which confirms any past criminal activity. This can include anything from a DUI to membership in an organized crime group.

Passport

Passports are a vital travel document, allowing you to enter or exit Canada. They also prove your identity and citizenship.

There are several different types of passports: ordinary, official and diplomatic. Each has a different colour cover.

Those holding diplomatic passports can be exempt from border inspections, and often receive special visa policies in certain countries.

However, it is important to note that the laws in most countries require passports for all entry into and exit from their country.

It is advisable to carry your passport with you at all times, as it will help to avoid any mishaps when travelling abroad.

In addition, the Government of Canada has issued electronic passports (ePassport) since July 2013. This type of passport provides a secure system to ensure that your information is kept safe and that you can be identified through your biometrics. It also has an embedded chip that encodes your personal data.

Express Entry

Express Entry is Canada’s online system for managing applications for permanent residence under federal economic immigration programs. Designed to better align immigration intake with labour market requirements, Express Entry is a flexible, efficient system that allows the government to quickly respond to changes in immigration needs.

Candidates who create an Express Entry profile submit a number of details about themselves, including age, education, work experience, language skills and Canadian connections. These are used to rank profiles in the Express Entry pool and determine who receives an invitation to apply for permanent residence.

Candidates are ranked based on their Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS) score, which includes scores for core human capital factors and skill transferability. The higher the CRS score, the more likely they are to receive an invitation to apply.

Refugees

Refugees are people who have been forced to flee their countries because of a conflict or threat. They are usually seeking asylum, which means they can live and work in Canada without fear of prosecution.

Some refugees are motivated by economic reasons, such as finding jobs or a better life in a new country. Others are drawn by the idea of being a part of a community and starting a family.

In recent years, the number of refugees has been rising in Canada as more humanitarian crises arise around the world. However, many are not settling in Canada and are instead entering the country through irregular crossings.

This study examines labour market outcomes for refugees from 13 major source countries with large inflows to Canada over the 1980-to-2009 period. It is the first empirical analysis of this type to address earnings and employment.
